Miami-Dade County, Florida, has officially renamed a street to honor President-elect Donald Trump after his historic victory in the 2024 election. On December 3, the Hialeah City Council voted 9-1 to co-designate Palm Avenue as “President Donald J. Trump Avenue,” a symbolic gesture recognizing Trump’s significant impact on the area.
The decision came after Trump flipped Miami-Dade, a longtime Democratic stronghold, with a commanding 13% margin. Notably, the renaming received support from both Republicans and some Democrats on the County Commission. Four Democratic commissioners joined five Republicans in backing the move, despite concerns from others, particularly regarding Trump’s rhetoric on immigration.
Democratic Commissioner Marleine Bastien expressed her respect for Trump’s victory but emphasized the lasting trauma felt by immigrant communities due to his remarks. Nevertheless, the street renaming passed with minimal opposition, as Trump’s popularity in Miami-Dade, especially within the Cuban American community, remains strong.
Hialeah Mayor Esteban “Steve” Bovo, a key proponent of the initiative, highlighted Trump’s “commitment to putting America first,” and the street renaming serves as a tribute to the former president’s leadership.
This marks the first time a Republican has won Miami-Dade since 1988, and the street sign will now be displayed on county infrastructure, cementing Trump’s legacy in the region.
