Concrete Falls from Tunnel Ceiling, Smashes Car Window in Fort Lauderdale

A South Florida man is demanding answers after a frightening incident in Fort Lauderdale’s Henry E. Kinney Tunnel. Gary Gerbino says a chunk of concrete fell from the tunnel ceiling and crashed through his car’s rear window while he was driving through it on Tuesday.

“It was scary, really scary,” Gerbino said, describing how the loud crash startled him. His back window was completely shattered, and glass and chunks of concrete—some fist-sized—were strewn across his vehicle.

Gerbino is grateful no one else was in the car, especially in the back seat. “If I had a kid back there, they’d be dead,” he said, shaken by what could have happened.

His concern is amplified by the fact that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) recently completed a major renovation of the tunnel. The project, which began in 2021, wrapped up just last year. “It’s brand new,” Gerbino said. “Why is the ceiling falling?”

He believes the tunnel should be shut down again for a full inspection to ensure safety, fearing the next incident could be far worse. “If it hit my windshield, I wouldn’t be here,” he said.

NBC6 contacted FDOT, who said they are investigating the situation.
