Who Is Nicolás Maduro and Why His Capture Shook Venezuela

Nicolás Maduro’s capture by U.S. forces marked a dramatic end to the rule of a man who oversaw Venezuela’s political repression and economic collapse.

Maduro rose from a Caracas bus driver and union activist to become president after being personally chosen by Hugo Chávez as his successor. With little formal education beyond high school and strong ties to Cuba, Maduro climbed the political ranks after Chávez took power, eventually serving as foreign minister and vice president before narrowly winning the presidency in 2013.

His presidency was defined by widespread human rights abuses, political purges, and economic devastation. Millions were driven into poverty, more than 7.7 million Venezuelans fled the country, and thousands of opponents were jailed or tortured. International bodies opened investigations into crimes against humanity.

Venezuela’s economy shrank by more than 70% under Maduro, with inflation reaching staggering levels and oil production collapsing. Sanctions imposed by the U.S. targeted Maduro, his allies, and state-run industries in an attempt to force political change.

Though Maduro survived protests, assassination attempts, and international isolation, his grip weakened after a disputed 2024 election widely rejected by world leaders. U.S. pressure intensified after President Donald Trump returned to office, building a regional military presence and targeting what Washington described as narco-terrorism.

Maduro’s capture followed months of escalating pressure and marked what many Venezuelans see as the end of an era defined by repression, corruption, and economic ruin.
