Three Broward County high school basketball coaches are facing serious charges following an investigation into an alleged scheme to illegally rent out school gyms for private tournaments.

Donald Calloway, 50, an assistant girls’ basketball coach at Coral Springs High School, was arrested and charged with grand theft and organized scheme to defraud, according to arrest affidavits. Authorities also announced the arrests of Henry McNabb, boys’ basketball coach at Blanche Ely High School, and Brenton Hankerson, head girls’ basketball coach at Coral Springs High.

Investigators said Calloway illegally rented out school gym facilities between April and June by bypassing district approval procedures and entering private agreements with outside basketball organizations. Payments were allegedly funneled through Hankerson, who then paid Calloway. Authorities say Calloway made approximately $2,800 through the scheme.

McNabb is accused of running unauthorized tournaments at Blanche Ely High School and Hollywood Hills High School.

One victim, Delvin King, said he paid to rent a gym for a private school graduation, only to arrive and find the facility already occupied by a basketball tournament.

“When I questioned why they were there, I was told to wait it out,” King said. “That’s when I realized something wasn’t right.”

Broward County Public Schools said all three coaches could face termination. The investigation into the improper use of district facilities is ongoing.
