Evelyn Valdes, who had just celebrated her 28th birthday, was tragically killed early Saturday morning during a police-involved shooting in Wynwood.
The incident occurred around 3 a.m., as nightclubs were closing and crowds filled the streets. Witnesses reported hearing up to 10 gunshots and seeing people fleeing the scene.
According to investigators, Miami police encountered an armed man near NW 1st Court and 23rd Street. Officers say the situation escalated, leading multiple officers to open fire, killing the man.
Valdes was also shot and killed during the exchange. Authorities have not confirmed whether the fatal bullet came from police or another source. Another man was also injured in the incident.
Police spent several hours at the scene collecting surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. “We’re still investigating what led the male to be armed and what role the female and the other injured man played,” said Miami Police Officer Michael Vega.
Valdes’ family is now raising funds through a GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses. Their attorney said the family is too devastated to speak publicly.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is also involved in the investigation.
