Trump Moves to Pay TSA Workers Amid Airport Chaos and Shutdown Crisis

As a prolonged government funding crisis disrupts travel nationwide, President Donald Trump announced he will sign an emergency order to ensure Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers are paid.

The Department of Homeland Security funding shutdown has now stretched over 40 days, leaving thousands of TSA employees without pay. The result has been severe airport delays, long security lines and staffing shortages, with many workers calling out or quitting altogether.

Trump said the emergency action is necessary to stop what he called “chaos at the airports.” The White House is also considering more drastic measures, including declaring a national emergency or deploying additional federal personnel to assist with airport operations.

The situation has become critical. More than 11% of TSA workers nationwide have missed shifts, and some airports are seeing callout rates exceeding 40%. Officials have even warned that airport closures are possible if staffing continues to decline.

Meanwhile, negotiations in Congress remain deadlocked. Democrats are demanding limits on immigration enforcement practices, while Republicans are pushing for full funding of border operations. A “last and final” proposal is being discussed, but no agreement has been reached.

Travelers are already feeling the impact. Reports of hours-long waits and missed flights are increasing, with some passengers saying they would have been better off driving.

Until a deal is reached, disruptions are expected to continue — making travel planning more unpredictable than ever.
