Trump Administration Halts Immigration Processing for 19 Countries After D.C. Shooting

The Trump administration has paused all immigration processing for people from 19 countries already under U.S. travel restrictions implemented in June. The DHS memo lists affected nations including Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Yemen, Cuba, Venezuela, Myanmar, Sudan, Somalia, and others.

The suspension covers asylum cases and all other immigration proceedings while the government conducts an expanded security review. The move follows a shooting in Washington, D.C., that left a National Guard member dead. The suspect is an Afghan immigrant who entered the U.S. recently after receiving asylum.

The decision aligns with President Trump’s June 4 proclamation barring entry from the same 19 countries. Immigration groups criticized the pause as overly broad, while supporters say it is needed for national security.
