A young man pulled from the ocean near 90th Street and Collins Avenue in Surfside on Sunday evening has died, according to Miami-Dade authorities.

Lifeguards responded around 7 p.m. to reports of a missing swimmer. Witnesses said rescue teams searched for several minutes before finding the man and bringing him ashore on a rescue sled. CPR was administered immediately, but he did not respond.

“He was with friends. Watching them see this unfold was heartbreaking,” said Everlayn Borges, a bystander who captured the aftermath on video. Borges, a free diver, warned about the dangers of swimming during windy conditions, urging beachgoers to never underestimate the ocean.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday that the man’s death was accidental. His identity has not been released.

This incident capped a dangerous weekend on South Florida beaches. A teenager drowned Friday in Fort Lauderdale, and Miami Beach Ocean Rescue responded to two additional near drownings on Sunday. Both victims in those incidents were safely rescued and treated on scene.

Officials urge swimmers to stay vigilant and respect ocean conditions, especially during rough surf.
