A new video has emerged showing Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett questioning police officers during a traffic detail on Thursday. In the footage, Burkett asks officers about their plans and suggests they should focus on heavy traffic, despite the officers explaining that working together for safety is standard practice. Burkett questions the need for two officers, stating it seemed inefficient, and criticized the officers for “babysitting” a driver with a learner’s permit while crime continues in Surfside.
When questioned by a reporter, Burkett defended his actions, citing his concern for public safety. He admitted to lacking police experience but insisted his “common knowledge” guided his decisions. The Surfside Police Union strongly condemned the mayor’s behavior, claiming it jeopardized both public and officer safety. Burkett, however, dismissed these concerns, stating the video clearly shows his actions were not reckless and accusing the union of dishonesty.
This follows an earlier controversy in which Burkett interrupted a police officer during a traffic stop, further raising questions about his involvement in law enforcement matters.
