An 18-year-old Florida International University honor student, Ronaldo Hernandez-Padron, was arrested after Instagram flagged his private messages to the FBI for containing violent threats. In a group chat, Hernandez-Padron allegedly posted alarming messages like “bad things are going to happen” and “bombing a house today.”
The FBI, alerted by Instagram’s tip, swiftly arrested the teen, who now faces charges for writing threats to conduct a mass shooting or terrorism. His attorney, David Donet, claimed the comments were meant as a joke, seeking a low bond for Hernandez-Padron’s release.
Judge Mindy Glazer, referencing recent violent incidents, emphasized the seriousness of such threats, stating that law enforcement must treat all online threats as genuine. If convicted, Hernandez-Padron could face up to 15 years in prison.
Hernandez-Padron apologized for his actions, calling the messages a poor joke and expressing remorse for causing concern. He pledged to learn from the incident and become a better person. The university has yet to comment on the situation.
