South Florida Matriarch Convicted in Murder-for-Hire Case

Donna Adelson, the wealthy South Florida matriarch accused of orchestrating the 2014 killing of her former son-in-law, was convicted Thursday of first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation.

Daniel Markel, a Florida State University law professor, was shot outside his Tallahassee home amid a bitter custody battle with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson. Prosecutors argued that Donna Adelson masterminded the plot after Markel blocked her daughter from relocating their children closer to family in Miami.

The case drew national attention for years, involving multiple trials. Adelson’s son, Charles, and his former girlfriend are already serving life sentences for their roles. Two hired gunmen are also imprisoned.

Markel’s family welcomed the verdict, saying it offered hope for renewed ties with his children. Adelson’s sentencing will be scheduled later this year.
