South Florida Faces Heavy Rain, Flash Flood Risk Through the Weekend

After several dry days, South Florida is heading into a significantly wetter stretch beginning Wednesday night and lasting potentially through early next week.

A humid air mass moving in from the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico is already reshaping the region’s weather pattern. By Thursday, southwesterly winds will draw deep tropical moisture into the area, triggering widespread afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

Rain chances Thursday afternoon climb to 70 to 80 percent across much of South Florida. The Weather Prediction Center has flagged a flash flood risk for parts of the East Coast, including metro areas, with the primary concern being rapid water accumulation on streets and in low-drainage urban areas. While severe weather is not broadly anticipated, individual storms could bring torrential downpours, frequent lightning, and strong wind gusts.

The unsettled pattern is expected to persist through the weekend, with multiple atmospheric disturbances cycling through the region and fueling repeated rounds of storms and localized flooding.

The extended forecast: Thursday will be partly sunny with numerous storms and isolated flooding risk to the north, high of 87. Friday brings storms likely at 60 percent chance, high of 88. Saturday remains mostly cloudy with a 60 percent storm chance and a high of 88.

Residents should monitor drainage conditions and avoid flooded roadways.
