A recreational softball game in Aventura descended into violence over the weekend when a dispute between teams escalated into a brawl and one player allegedly swung a metal bat into the back of an opponent’s head, sending him to a trauma center and landing the attacker in jail.

The altercation broke out around 9:30 a.m. Sunday during an adult league game at Waterways Park on Northeast 213th Street. According to Aventura police, a verbal argument between the two teams boiled over into pushing and shoving among multiple players. In the chaos, authorities say 41-year-old Roberto Araujo grabbed a metal bat and struck another player in the head.

Surveillance footage from the park captured the moment, police said, showing Araujo swinging the bat with enough force that the victim’s baseball cap popped off his head. Officers who arrived found the victim sweating, with a contusion and a small amount of blood at the back of his head. Medics rushed him to a nearby hospital as a Level 1 trauma alert patient.

By then, Araujo had already left. Witnesses told investigators they saw him swing the bat before fleeing the park in a white Buick, prompting police to issue a lookout alert. A short time later, another officer spotted a vehicle matching the description and pulled it over on Biscayne Boulevard, detaining Araujo without incident.

He was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. At a bond hearing, a judge found probable cause and set his bond at 7,500 dollars.

The episode has drawn attention across South Florida and renewed unease about flashes of violence at recreational sporting events meant to offer friendly competition and community. Police said the investigation remains open, and they encouraged anyone with additional information to come forward. What began as a weekend pastime ended with one man hospitalized, another facing a felony, and a familiar question about how quickly tempers on a ball field can turn dangerous.
