Shark Startles Swimmers Ahead of Panthers Parade

Beachgoers at Fort Lauderdale Beach got an unexpected surprise Thursday when a shark was spotted swimming close to shore—just steps away from children wading in waist-deep water.

Aerial footage from Chopper 6 captured the shark cruising through shallow waters, not far from where crews were setting up the stage for Sunday’s Florida Panthers Stanley Cup celebration.

At one point, the shark swam right next to two children, prompting lifeguards to quickly act.

According to Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue, swimmers were ordered out of the water for safety, and the beach was cleared for about 30 minutes as a precaution.

One man who was in the water at the time described the encounter as brief and calmly handled.
“There was a baby shark and people had to get out,” he told NBC6. “The lifeguards saw it and told us to get out, so it’s no big deal.”

Authorities say shark sightings in the area are not uncommon, especially during warmer months. The type of shark has not been confirmed, and no injuries were reported.

Swimmers were allowed to return to the water once lifeguards gave the all-clear.

Officials remind the public to always follow lifeguard instructions and stay alert when swimming in ocean waters.
