Republican Jimmy Patronis secured victory in Florida’s 1st Congressional District special election Tuesday, bolstered by former President Donald Trump’s endorsement. Despite being outspent by Democrat Gay Valimont, Patronis maintained the district’s long-standing Republican dominance.
The seat was left vacant after former Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew from consideration for Trump’s attorney general post amid allegations of misconduct, which he denied. Valimont attracted significant national Democratic funding, hoping to capitalize on opposition to Trump’s second-term policies. However, Patronis won decisively with 56.9% of the vote.
At a celebratory gathering in Pensacola, Patronis thanked supporters alongside his wife and two sons.
Meanwhile, in Florida’s 6th Congressional District, Republican state Sen. Randy Fine narrowly defeated Democrat Josh Weil. Fine, who also received Trump’s endorsement, faced a tighter race than expected, winning with 56.7% of the vote. Weil’s campaign received nearly ten times more funding, fueled by Democratic enthusiasm, but failed to flip the reliably Republican district.
Fine’s victory, despite internal party criticism and financial struggles, reassured Republicans wary of early challenges in Trump’s second term. His campaign emphasized conservative values, particularly strong support for Israel and restrictions on LGBTQ+ rights.
Despite heavy Democratic investment, both races reinforced Florida’s deep-red status, dashing Democratic hopes for early upsets.
