Rare Snow Flurries Fall Across Florida as Arctic Blast Grips the State

Florida experienced an unusual taste of winter Saturday as snow flurries were reported from Tampa to Tallahassee amid an intense arctic cold snap. Residents across Central and North Florida shared images and videos of light snow as temperatures plunged to near-freezing levels.

Snow flurries were spotted in the Tampa Bay area, Gainesville, Jacksonville, and Tallahassee. Jacksonville International Airport reported a light dusting, while Tallahassee residents saw brief flurries during the morning hours. Meteorologists said the snow was light and short-lived but notable for a state unaccustomed to winter precipitation.

The last time parts of the Tampa Bay area saw snow flurries was in January 2010, with an earlier occurrence in December 1989. Florida’s most significant snowfall remains January 1977, when up to two inches fell east of Tampa.

The cold air mass continued pushing south throughout the day, bringing strong winds and dangerously low wind chills. Forecasters warned that gusts of 30–40 mph could drive wind chills into the 20s, even where temperatures remained slightly above freezing.

The National Weather Service urged residents to dress in layers, limit outdoor exposure, and take precautions to protect pets, plants, and pipes. While snow accumulation was minimal, officials emphasized that icy roads, hypothermia risks, and frost damage posed greater threats.
