Race Against Time: Father’s Viral Plea to Save Son from Rare Blood Disorder

by | Mar 29, 2026 | Miami News

Juan Uribe’s TikTok plea has reached 26 million people, but his 15-year-old son Max is running out of time. Diagnosed with a rare blood disorder that could turn fatal, Max needs a stem cell transplant by May — and a perfect donor match by April 1.

The search is complicated by Max’s mixed heritage. As half Caucasian and half Latino, finding a genetic match is significantly harder. Only 13% of registered donors in the NMDP (the world’s most diverse stem cell registry) identify as Hispanic or Latino. Uribe is urgently calling on the Latino community — particularly in Miami, home to a large Colombian population — to register. The campaign has already driven a 41% spike in Hispanic registrations, but Uribe says at least one million more people need to sign up. Registering is simple: just a cheek swab, with ideal candidates aged 18–35. Visit swabformax.com.
