James Farthing, a 50-year-old Kentucky man who recently won a record-setting $167.3 million Powerball jackpot, was arrested just days later in Florida for allegedly assaulting a deputy.
Farthing, who claimed the massive prize on Monday, was taken into custody Wednesday at the Island Grand at Tradewinds resort in St. Pete Beach. According to an arrest affidavit, Farthing got into a fight with another guest. When Pinellas County deputies attempted to intervene, Farthing allegedly kicked one of them in the face.
He then tried to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended and booked into the Pinellas County Jail. He faces charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, battery, and resisting arrest without violence.
The $2 ticket, which Farthing purchased with his mother, set a new record for the largest Powerball win in Kentucky history. Despite his sudden windfall, his luck appears to have taken a swift turn for the worse.
