One person was killed and another critically injured in a shooting outside a cosmetology school in Davie on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a large police response and lockdowns at nearby schools.

The shooting occurred shortly after 2 p.m. in the parking lot of Aveda Institute South Florida, located on South University Drive. Davie Police confirmed one victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Authorities said the shooting took place outside the school and stressed that they were not searching for any suspects, suggesting the incident was isolated. No motive has been released, and police have not identified the victims or said whether they were students, employees, or otherwise connected to the school.

Aerial footage showed multiple officers surrounding the area with weapons drawn, and yellow crime scene tape blocking off part of the parking lot. Investigators were seen examining a white vehicle with what appeared to be bullet holes and a body in the passenger seat.

Students at nearby Know-It-All Preparatory School described being placed under a “code red,” sheltering quietly in classrooms as police secured the area. Another nearby school, St. David Catholic School, was also placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Witnesses inside the beauty school described scenes of panic as police evacuated the building. One woman receiving services at the school said people were running, crying, and confused as officers entered with rifles raised.

Aveda Institute announced it would remain closed for the rest of Tuesday and Wednesday, stating that the safety of students and staff remains its top priority and that it is cooperating fully with law enforcement.

The investigation remains ongoing.
