Ocean Drive is a multi-lane roadway that runs through the South Beach neighborhood of Miami Beach. The street runs north-south and is popular for its shopping, dining, museums, hotels, and nightlife. In July 2020 a resolution passed prohibiting cars on Ocean Drive to increase seating on the sidewalk and create a pedestrian passage. The commission is also working on plans to make other heavily trafficked roads throughout the city more pedestrian-friendly by implementing a variety of innovative designs. These include making wider walks and adding benches, as well as adding greenery and bike parking.
Ocean Drive, which is one of the most desirable locations in South Florida, is home to many influential Art Deco hotels and restaurants that have been prominently featured in a number of movies, shows, and media. The iconic buildings line a 3.5-mile stretch of beautiful coastline as you make your way south on Ocean Drive from Downtown Miami Beach to the Miami-Dade County border. Some of the most iconic hotels in Ocean Drive history are still thriving in the modern day and age. These three examples include, but are not limited to, The Colony Hotel, The Clevelander Hotel, and The Carlyle Hotel.
The Sunray Apartments were the location of many iconic scenes from the movie Scarface, including the scene where Tony smith is being interviewed by a Playboy journalist and snorts cocaine in his office. The grand theft auto: vice city game bases its look on the city of Miami. This is done to make the city livelier and more like a bustling tourist area. The Miami, Florida city of Ocean Drive has become a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful architecture, and rich culture, and after it was replicated in the game Watch Dogs 2.
Casa Casuarina is beautifully white building along the ocean that has been renovated into a luxurious hotel that’s as iconic as they come. Once the residence of Italian fashion designer and Miami native Gianni Versace, this very street was the site of his tragic and untimely death in 1997. In the aftermath of his death, the house had been sold and adapted for use as a boutique hotel. With its bold, re-purposed aesthetic, it has since become the most photographed house in North America.
