As the Atlantic hurricane season approaches its June 1 start, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is set to announce its 2025 outlook this Thursday. This comes as early forecasts from Colorado State University (CSU) predict an above-average season, with 17 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes expected.

These projections exceed the historical average of 14 named storms and 7 hurricanes, driven largely by warmer sea surface temperatures in the subtropical Atlantic and Caribbean.

The 2024 hurricane season was notably active, producing 18 named storms and 11 hurricanes. Three names—Beryl, Helene, and Milton—were retired due to their destructive impacts and fatalities.

The 2025 hurricane names list includes Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van, and Wendy.

The season will run through November 30, and NOAA’s updated forecast will help emergency planners and residents prepare for what could be a busy storm year.

Stay tuned for NOAA’s full outlook and ensure your hurricane preparedness plans are up to date.
