Nationwide Recall of Soaps Over Life-Threatening Infection Risk

DermaRite Industries has issued a voluntary recall of several antiseptic and antimicrobial soap products sold nationwide due to contamination with Burkholderia cepacia complex bacteria. The bacteria, commonly found in soil and water, can cause dangerous infections — particularly in immunocompromised individuals — and may lead to life-threatening sepsis.

The recall affects certain lots of DermaKleen, DermaSarra, KleenFoam, and PeriGiene products. No infections have been reported so far, but the company urges customers to stop using the products immediately and destroy them per facility guidelines.

Symptoms of infection can range from mild skin issues to severe respiratory problems.

Consumers with questions can call (973) 569-9000 x104 or email voluntary.action@dermarite.com. Suspected adverse reactions should be reported to the FDA’s MedWatch program. A full list of affected lot numbers is available on the FDA’s website.
