Millions of Floridians Could Lose Food Aid if Shutdown Continues

Nearly 3 million Floridians could lose access to food assistance next month if the federal government shutdown extends into November.
The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF), which administers the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), said it cannot issue November benefits until federal funding resumes.

“SNAP benefits for November will not be issued until the federal funding is restored,” DCF announced Wednesday. Recipients may still receive notices showing their eligible amounts but won’t see funds until the shutdown ends.

October benefits remain unaffected, and DCF continues to process new applications and renewals. The agency also warned recipients not to reapply, as it could delay processing.

SNAP, which provides an average of $187 a month to more than 41 million Americans, is a key federal lifeline that helps families buy groceries. Because it depends on federal appropriations, it’s more vulnerable to shutdowns than programs like Social Security and Medicaid, which continue operating.

Meanwhile, food banks and community groups are bracing for a surge in demand if the shutdown persists. Floridians can check their current balances anytime at ebtEDGE.com.
