Miami Eyes Second Airport and Taller Port as Growth Pushes Infrastructure to Its Limits

Miami-Dade County is planning a sweeping $14 billion infrastructure expansion to handle surging passenger and cargo demand over the next 15 years. At the annual “State of the Ports” event, officials outlined how both Miami International Airport and PortMiami are adapting to a rapidly growing region. MIA Director Ralph Cutie warned the airport could hit capacity within 15 years, prompting county commissioners to begin studying the feasibility of a second airport — a process that itself could take two decades. Current plans include a new $750 million Concourse K completing by 2029, a $1.1 billion Concourse D60 breaking ground in 2027, and a major cargo facility expansion. PortMiami, confined to its island footprint, is building vertically — stacking containers higher and exploring an inland port concept to move off-site operations like empty container storage. Officials say the projects will be funded through public-private partnerships rather than taxpayer money.
