A longtime Miami-Dade Police sergeant is facing serious felony charges after authorities say he provided alcohol and illegal drugs to a 15-year-old boy and engaged in inappropriate conduct.

James H. Edwards, 47, a 27-year veteran of the department, was arrested Wednesday and later released on an $85,500 bond. As part of his release conditions, he was placed on house arrest and barred from accessing the internet or contacting minors.

According to investigators, Edwards invited the teen to his home earlier this month under the pretense of doing landscaping work. Once there, he allegedly gave the teen alcohol and illegal substances. Detectives said that after being advised of his rights, Edwards admitted to supplying the teen with the items and acknowledged inappropriate behavior.

Authorities also revealed that Edwards had previously been arrested in a similar case involving the boy’s 16-year-old brother, who accused him of offering drugs and exposing him to harmful material. Police say Edwards also admitted to those allegations during questioning.

Miami-Dade Police officials condemned the reported misconduct and emphasized that the investigation is being conducted in coordination with the State Attorney’s Office. The department is urging anyone who may have had a similar encounter with Edwards to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
