Fire crews are battling a massive wildfire in southwest Miami-Dade that has scorched 14,000 acres and temporarily shut down access to the Florida Keys. Despite ongoing efforts, the fire remains only 20% contained.

Road Closures & Travel Impact

US 1 has reopened but may close intermittently for firefighting operations. Card Sound Road, the only alternative route to the mainland, remains closed indefinitely.

Red Flag Warning Issued

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for South Florida from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. With low humidity, gusty winds, and ongoing drought conditions, fire danger remains extremely high.

Firefighting Efforts

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service are working around the clock to contain the blaze. Helicopters are pulling water from nearby lakes to douse the flames, but the wet, uneven terrain makes ground operations difficult.

Threats & Safety Updates

So far, no injuries or structural damage have been reported. The fire is burning in a mostly rural area, but officials urge residents to stay alert.

Looking Ahead

Wildfires are common during South Florida’s dry season, which lasts until mid-May. Authorities continue to monitor conditions and warn that travel disruptions could persist.
