Disturbing footage has surfaced of 42-year-old Zachary Perez, a former Marine, allegedly torturing his 6-year-old stepson in Miami. In one video, Perez is seen holding a pink dog leash wrapped around the child’s neck. Another shows the boy running outside with a backpack filled with rocks. Additional clips reveal Perez kicking the child and striking him with a tree branch.
The abuse reportedly lasted two days, leaving the child with swollen eyes, scratches, and a neck rash from the leash. Prosecutors say several past partners of Perez have since reported similar abuse, including his own 14-year-old daughter. He faces multiple injunctions for domestic violence.
Perez’s attorneys claim the child’s mother approved of his discipline, but prosecutors dispute that, citing video evidence. His mother blames PTSD from military service, hearing loss, and surgeries from three tours overseas.
Perez has pleaded not guilty and is on house arrest with mental health treatment. He is barred from contacting the child or his mother.
Children’s advocate Amanda Altman says the trauma may have deep roots in Perez’s own untreated history. “What trauma did he suffer that led to this?” she asked.
