Man Fatally Shoots Mother While Hallucinating on Mushrooms, Strips Naked Afterward

A Sunrise man fatally shot his mother while experiencing a psychedelic-induced hallucination before stripping naked and fleeing, authorities said.

Jorge Omar Torres, 29, was arrested for murder after the shooting Friday evening at Waterside Village Condos. Police responded to reports of gunfire and found Torres running naked in and out of an apartment. Officers arrived to discover his mother’s body near the front door, with a handgun discarded in the backyard.

Surveillance footage captured Torres jumping a fence into a neighbor’s yard, removing his shorts, and later being apprehended naked by police.

During questioning, Torres admitted to consuming hallucinogenic mushrooms and marijuana at Markham Park before returning home, where he began hallucinating. He told his brother he needed to kill cockroaches and later retrieved his 9mm firearm, initially considering shooting his brother but deciding against it.

When his mother returned home, they argued about his well-being. She urged him to rest, but Torres climbed out of his window, claiming he needed to rescue his dog. His mother convinced him to reenter the house while his brother retrieved the dog. After she locked the door, Torres believed she was a “bad guy,” retrieved his gun, and shot her multiple times in the chest.

Torres fled through the backyard but was later arrested and held without bond.
