A 31-year-old man accused of shooting his girlfriend in southwest Miami-Dade has been denied bond and charged with second-degree attempted murder, authorities said.

Giovanni Echevarria was arrested Friday following a shooting at the home he shared with the victim, with whom he had been in a relationship for approximately three years. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the couple was lying in bed when a verbal argument escalated into violence.

An arrest report states Echevarria retrieved a firearm and fired a single shot, striking the woman in the chest. Despite her injuries, the victim managed to call 911 and told dispatchers, “He shot me in the chest.”

Deputies arrived to find the woman critically injured. She was transported to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where authorities later confirmed she suffered two gunshot wounds — one to the chest and another to the buttocks.

Echevarria told investigators he intended to harm himself and claimed the gun discharged accidentally during a struggle as the victim tried to take it away. Detectives, however, recovered the firearm and a spent shell casing at the scene.

Court records show Echevarria has an extensive criminal history, with more than 70 prior arrests, including dozens of criminal offenses. He is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
