A 26-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking and trying to drown a woman during a late-night walk on Tiger Shores Beach in Stuart, Florida.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the attack happened around 11 p.m. Thursday while the woman was speaking on the phone with a relative. The suspect reportedly struck her from behind, forced her into the water, and attempted to drown her.

The victim lost consciousness during the struggle. Believing she was dead, the suspect allegedly threw her phone into the ocean and left the scene.

Miraculously, the woman regained consciousness and walked more than a mile before locating a deputy and reporting the attack.

Authorities launched an intensive two-day investigation, reviewing surveillance footage and canvassing the area.

On Sunday night, police in Port St. Lucie responded to a call involving a suicidal man who claimed he had murdered a woman on a Martin County beach. Officers identified him as Said Alexander Hernandez Gonzalez.

Investigators say he admitted attacking the woman because she “made him angry.” He reportedly told officers he felt no remorse. After leaving the beach, he allegedly smoked marijuana, drank vodka, and went home.

The woman survived the attack.

Hernandez Gonzalez was booked into jail on an attempted murder charge. Authorities say he is an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela and is being held with an ICE detainer.
