In a moving ceremony filled with resilience and love, hospital staff at HCA Florida Kendall Hospital helped a burn survivor marry her fiancé while recovering in the intensive care unit.

Arianna Esquiline, 34, suffered severe third-degree burns on January 3 after a barbecue grill burst into flames while she was vacationing in Miami. Over six weeks, she underwent 12 surgeries and intensive therapy.

Determined not to delay her future, Esquiline told her fiancé, Elvin, she wanted to marry him right away. Within two weeks, he secured a marriage license, and hospital staff organized a chapel ceremony just days before Valentine’s Day.

Dr. Jonathan Freedman, a burn surgeon at the hospital, praised Esquiline’s remarkable recovery, calling her progress “unbelievable.” Speaking from her ICU bed, the bride said the accident clarified what matters most.

“After this happened, it made me realize this is the man I want in my life,” she said.

The couple, engaged since May, plan to return to their home in Fort Myers after she completes additional surgeries and rehabilitation.

Hospital leaders said they were honored to help the couple celebrate love amid hardship.
