NEW YORK — Investigators are still searching for the gunman who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a New York City hotel on November 29. The suspect, believed to have left the city shortly after the shooting, was last seen riding a bicycle into Central Park and taking a taxi to a bus terminal. Authorities are offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.
The shooter, who concealed his identity with a mask, ambushed Thompson outside the company’s annual investor conference. Security footage shows the gunman approaching Thompson from behind and firing multiple shots with a silenced weapon. Investigators are exploring whether the attack was motivated by a personal grievance with the insurer, possibly involving a disgruntled employee or client.
Police found a backpack in Central Park that may belong to the suspect. It is being analyzed for clues, though its contents have not been revealed. Additionally, investigators are tracking down DNA samples from discarded items and are reviewing video footage from a Manhattan hostel where the shooter stayed. Security cameras at various locations show the suspect masked throughout his movements in the city, except in one photo from the hostel.
The attack has shocked the health insurance industry, leading companies to reevaluate security measures. UnitedHealth Group, which employs Thompson, is supporting his family and cooperating with investigators. The FBI continues to investigate, with hopes of making an arrest soon, though police stress the need for thorough work to ensure justice.
