Four men without legal status were arrested Sunday after a violent attempt to flee U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Homestead, Florida.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the incident began during a traffic stop when suspect Henry Isaul Garcia reversed his car, striking an ICE officer in the leg and nearly crushing him. Garcia then rammed several ICE vehicles before speeding into oncoming traffic and crashing into a van.
Garcia and three passengers — Ruben Sales Garcia, Marlon Gomez Hernandez, and Jorge Perez Martin — tried to escape on foot but were quickly detained. All four were taken to a hospital for evaluation and later placed in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.
Officials say the men entered the U.S. illegally at different times, with one previously deported in 2007. DHS condemned political rhetoric that it says has encouraged defiance of ICE, noting a surge of over 1,000% in assaults against officers.
“The violence against our brave ICE law enforcement must end,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said. The injured officer is recovering in stable condition.
