A dramatic shootout unfolded Tuesday at the Monte Carlo Apartments in West Miami-Dade, leaving a woman critically wounded and the suspected gunman dead.
Deputies rushed to the building on NW 72nd Avenue after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire just before 4 p.m. Surveillance video showed officers running in with weapons drawn. Inside, they found a woman shot in the upper body and rushed her to the hospital.
Witnesses directed deputies to the fourth floor, where they confronted the armed suspect. A gun battle broke out between him and three deputies. Authorities have not confirmed who fired first. Deputies retreated and waited for the Special Response Team, which later entered and found the suspect dead.
Residents described the chaos, with one woman recalling her daughter’s frantic call as gunshots rang out. Another neighbor said his aunt narrowly escaped after the gunman forced his way into her apartment.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating, as is standard when police fire their weapons.
