Government Shutdown and Storms Trigger Massive Airport Delays Across the U.S.

Travel disruptions intensified Monday at major airports across the country as severe storms and a partial federal government shutdown combined to create widespread delays.

Long lines formed at both Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport as passengers struggled through crowded terminals.

According to FlightAware, more than 3,500 flights nationwide were canceled, while roughly 6,300 were delayed.

The problems come during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Spring break vacations and fans traveling to the NCAA basketball tournaments have filled airports across the country.

At the same time, a partial government shutdown that began on February 14 has created staffing challenges for airport security. The shutdown affects the Department of Homeland Security, including the Transportation Security Administration.

Many TSA screeners recently missed their first full paycheck since the shutdown began, raising concerns about staffing levels at security checkpoints.

Meanwhile, powerful storms sweeping across the eastern half of the United States further complicated travel. The weather system brought heavy snow to parts of the Midwest and moved toward the East Coast with high winds and the possibility of tornadoes.

Major hubs including airports in New York, Chicago, and Atlanta reported significant delays as airlines struggled to manage weather disruptions and passenger demand.

Officials at Miami International Airport warned that travelers should expect heavy crowds throughout the week as spring break travel continues.
