Fortnite Threat Sparks Tension Between Parkland Families

Two South Florida families are locked in a bitter dispute after a 13-year-old boy made alarming comments during an online game of Fortnite.

In a recorded gaming session, a student from Westglades Middle School in Parkland can be heard saying, “I’m not bringing a weapon to school unless they try and hurt my dad,” followed by, “I’ll gladly go to jail, and I’ll kill myself in jail.”

The comments triggered an investigation by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Deputies searched the teen’s home for weapons, and the school district launched its own review. Ultimately, school officials concluded the student did not pose a credible threat. He was not suspended or expelled but received a verbal warning about responsible online behavior. The district said it implemented appropriate interventions and continues monitoring the situation.

The teen’s father, Jason Ruppert, insists the remarks were nothing more than “trash talk” tied to an ongoing conflict between the families. He acknowledged the comments were inappropriate but argued they were made in anger and not meant as a real threat.

However, the other family strongly disagrees. Their attorney sent a letter to the school criticizing its decision to label the threat as “low-level.” The letter warned that if the student is allowed continued access to shared classes or spaces and harm occurs, the school would be held responsible.

The incident comes amid heightened sensitivity in Broward County following the Parkland school shooting. Authorities report 691 threats against county public schools since that tragedy—more than the previous two years combined.
