A bill proposing higher speed limits on Florida highways is gaining traction in the state Senate. The Senate Transportation Committee, led by Republicans, approved SB 462, introduced by Sen. Nick DiCeglie, R-Indian Rocks Beach. The measure seeks to increase the maximum speed on interstates and Florida’s Turnpike from 70 mph to 75 mph.
Additionally, the bill mandates the Department of Transportation to raise speed limits on four-lane divided highways in rural areas from 65 mph to 70 mph. Other roads currently limited to 60 mph could see an increase to 65 mph if deemed safe.
A similar proposal was vetoed in 2014 by then-Gov. Rick Scott, who cited concerns from law enforcement about the potential for more severe accidents. In his veto message, Scott warned that while speed isn’t the sole cause of crashes, higher limits could lead to more serious injuries and fatalities.
If passed, the new legislation could alter Florida’s driving landscape, with supporters emphasizing efficiency and opponents cautioning against safety risks.
