Florida Launches Property Tax Calculator as DeSantis Pushes Major Exemption Plan

Governor Ron DeSantis has launched an online calculator at SaveOurHomesFL.com allowing Florida homeowners to estimate their potential savings under his proposed property tax overhaul. The site greets visitors with a DeSantis quote: “Truly owning private property should not mean perpetually paying rent to the government.”

Users enter their home address and receive a breakdown of their current estimated taxes alongside projected savings under the new proposal. The tool went live days after DeSantis unveiled a plan to raise Florida’s homestead exemption from $50,000 to $250,000 for primary residences. A homeowner with a $400,000 property, for example, would only be taxed on $150,000 of its value. Lawmakers would also eventually be required to raise the exemption to $500,000.

The proposal must first clear a three-fifths supermajority in both legislative chambers before it could appear on the November ballot. Critics have called it a scaled-back version of DeSantis’ earlier promise to fully eliminate homestead property taxes, though the governor says the phased approach gives it a stronger chance of passing.
