The family of a Surfside man crushed to death by a Miami-Dade County bus is suing the county, demanding accountability and safety reforms.

James Corpora, 69, was killed on November 8, 2024, after exiting his legally parked SUV near a bus stop at 13th Street and Washington Avenue in South Beach. Surveillance footage captured the moment a bus pulling in struck his vehicle, pinning and killing him.

Attorney Michael Levine, representing the family, argues the crash was avoidable and highlights systemic failures, including poor bus stop design and unsafe parking proximity.

“This was an unsafe spot from the start,” Levine said. Since the tragedy, parking lines at the scene have been removed, indicating official acknowledgment of the danger.

The lawsuit seeks justice for Corpora and safer infrastructure to prevent future deaths. Miami-Dade County has yet to respond to questions about the incident.
