The largest and most varied collections of rare tropical plants in the world can be found at the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. The 83-acre garden was developed on the site of a banana plantation and was originally known as “Fairchild Republic”.The incredible collection at Fairchild Gardens is comprised of some of the exceptional plants in the world. Their collections include different varieties of ginger flavors, such as crystallized ginger, preserved ginger, and ground ginger. Fairchild Botanical Garden also is home to 125 species of bamboo in addition to the Bahamas collection that includes native woody plants and flora from botanical expeditions to the Bahamian islands. These plants are best suited for tropical climates and have been known to be used in a variety of tasks, including as houseplants, in landscaping projects, or simply as a decorative plants that can be enjoyed year-round. Fairchild Gardens has a vast list of public gardens which are all spread out across the landscape in an easy-to-navigate way. One particular garden that is worth mentioning is The Montgomery Palmetum, which features one of the most documented Palm Collections in the world They also feature some of the world’s most exotic tropical fruits, such as Durian, which can be found in some parts of Asia and The Amazon.
Fairchild Gardens operates the largest tropical flower and tree collection of any public garden in North America. It displays over 740 species of flowering trees from all over the world. The Cannonball tree, which is native to the Caribbean, is Fairchild Gardens’ most famous flowering tree and is notable for its large waxy green leaves that produce fluffy white flowers. It is one of the only cannonball trees in the United States. The tree is beautifully aligned and its graceful branches provide a welcoming touch.
Fairchild Gardens is the only rainforest in the continental United States and is a well-known botanical garden for both its diverse plant life and unique environmental work. The two-acre rainforest on the Fairchild Garden property features a waterfall and cascades that run throughout the landscape. The rainforest is home to a wide variety of plant life, most of which are found in the Amazon. The rainforest experience is also made more authentic by the inclusion of a misting system which is installed to provide an immersive atmosphere.
Fairchild is a museum, laboratory, learning center, and conservation research facility. It has been at the forefront of biodiversity preservation for more than 70 years and has seen many exciting breakthroughs and discoveries in that time. Its main role is to preserve biodiversity and educate visitors about the importance of conservation through interactive exhibits and activities. It has a large membership of 45,000 and a volunteer force that numbers more than 1,200.
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden has hosted a variety of art exhibits since 2003. The garden also hosted a series of seasonal weekend activities that are both fun and exciting for all people to attend. These events include concerts, plant society meetings, and festivals that are open to all that come to visit the garden.
