A Florida woman’s quick thinking saved her home and her life after an electric wheelchair exploded in her driveway Sunday morning. Alexandra Anaya heard clicking from a lithium-powered Zinger wheelchair she had recently bought secondhand and was charging with a non-manufacturer charger. She Googled the noise, found an urgent warning, and dragged the chair outside just in time.

“I heard it hiss first before it exploded and that’s why I turned to run,” Anaya said. Debris hit her in the back as she fled. Firefighters told her the flames were high enough to have caught the roof.

Her message: never leave lithium batteries charging unattended, always use the manufacturer’s charger, and treat clicking, hissing, or unusual heat as an emergency.
