DeSantis Backs Possible End to Florida Property Taxes

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signaled support for eliminating property taxes in the state, stating he would back a constitutional amendment to do so.

The conversation began on X when Texas Rep. Chip Roy posted about repealing gas can regulations. Florida First Lady Casey DeSantis echoed his sentiments, prompting a response from the governor. This led to a discussion on taxation, with a user stating that property taxes should align with a home’s affordable construction costs. DeSantis replied, “I agree!”

Another user asked about abolishing property taxes in Florida, to which DeSantis responded that since property taxes are local, eliminating them would require a constitutional amendment, needing 60% voter approval. He emphasized support for the boldest amendment possible, calling property taxes an “oppressive and ineffective” form of taxation.

Property taxes fund essential services like schools, police, fire protection, and infrastructure. However, DeSantis did not outline alternative revenue sources to offset the potential loss.

Florida is known for its tax-friendly policies, with no state income tax. The state instead relies on sales taxes, corporate income taxes, and other revenue streams.

If DeSantis pushes for an amendment, the debate over how Florida would compensate for lost tax revenue will be a critical issue.
