A tragic wrong-way collision early Sunday morning left two drivers dead and shut down all northbound lanes of the Florida Turnpike near Bird Road in Miami.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a blue Honda was traveling the wrong way around 4 a.m. when it slammed head-on into a silver Toyota. Both vehicles were left disabled and blocking lanes, and both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released.

Moments later, a second crash added to the chaos. A white Toyota collided with the two wrecked vehicles and a nearby trooper’s cruiser. The trooper, who was outside the vehicle at the time, was unharmed. Two passengers in the white Toyota were airlifted to Kendall HCA Hospital with serious injuries.

Video later posted online appeared to show the moment the white Toyota struck the Honda.

Authorities closed all northbound lanes while investigators worked through the morning, diverting traffic onto Bird Road. The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the wrong-way driving and the chain reaction that followed.
