Cameras Back on the Bus: Miami-Dade Relaunches School Safety Program

by | May 4, 2026 | Miami News

Miami-Dade County is reviving its school bus camera ticketing program after suspending it last year following what the sheriff called “unacceptable errors” in enforcement. The relaunch begins with a 14-day warning and education period starting May 4, after which violators will face $225 fines.

The original program was halted in April 2025 after drivers received citations despite obeying the law, and some tickets contained incorrect citation numbers and fine amounts. Since then, state law was amended to strengthen the legal framework and improve consistency and transparency in how the program operates.

Nine hundred buses will be equipped with cameras. All potential violations must be reviewed by deputies before a citation is issued, and drivers may now request a local hearing to contest tickets. All outstanding citations from the previous program will be dismissed.

Officials note that an estimated 40 million drivers illegally pass stopped school buses annually across the US, with Florida averaging over 8,000 violations per day.
