South Florida school districts are facing major shortfalls due to delayed federal education funds. Of the $30 million expected for Broward County, only $7 million has been released—leaving $23 million in limbo. Miami-Dade is waiting on $45 million.
Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn told the Broward School Board that programs for English learners, teacher training, and after-school enrichment are now at risk. “We can’t carry 142 staff members without those funds,” he warned.
Adding to the tension, the board is weighing whether to roll back last year’s cellphone ban for high schoolers. Hepburn opposes the change, citing fewer conflicts and better classroom engagement.
While the board debates phones, district leaders are urging Washington to release the remaining funds before staffing cuts become inevitable.
