A massive brush fire in southern Miami-Dade County caused major traffic disruptions Tuesday, shutting down key roadways to and from the Florida Keys.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded around 1:17 p.m. to a grass fire near the 40800 block and Card Sound Road. To combat the flames, officials closed Card Sound Road and US 1 in both directions, leading to significant delays. By Tuesday night, traffic on the 18-Mile Stretch had begun moving slowly, but authorities urged motorists to avoid the area.
US 1 reopened after about eight hours, while Card Sound Road remained closed late into the night. The fire, which has burned approximately 3,600 acres, is 20% contained. No injuries or structural damage have been reported.
Fire crews are working with the Florida Forest Service to contain the blaze, but challenging terrain is slowing progress. Officials advised residents and travelers, especially those with respiratory issues, to limit outdoor exposure due to smoke and haze.
Travelers heading to the Keys expressed frustration as they were forced to wait. “I just want to get home—I have a dog and things to take care of,” said Stefon Ford of Key Largo.
While wildfires in March are not unusual, officials warn that peak fire season in South Florida typically occurs in April, May, and June.
