Families are raising the alarm over harsh conditions at the Everglades migrant detention facility nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz.” Eveling Ortiz says her boyfriend, Vladimir Miranda, a Cuban migrant detained after a court hearing, is now suffering in the facility alongside others lacking water, hygiene, and legal access.
“They’re not bathing, they can’t use the bathroom properly, and mosquitoes are everywhere,” Ortiz reported. One detainee was hospitalized due to facial swelling caused by bites.
The Florida Immigration Coalition is urging Miami-Dade’s mayor to take legal action. Mayor Levine Cava has requested access, oversight, and transparency from the state, but officials remain unresponsive.
