Florida Clarifies License Plate Frame Law After Drivers Face Unexpected Penalties

Florida drivers with decorative license plate frames can breathe easier following a clarification signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis this week.

The original 2025 law was aimed at those deliberately obscuring plates to evade law enforcement. But its broad language created unintended consequences — drivers with ordinary decorative frames were ticketed, and at least one was briefly jailed. The new legislation, SB 488, codifies guidance issued in December by the Department of Highway Safety clarifying that frames are permissible as long as they don’t cover the plate’s letters, numbers, or registration sticker.

DeSantis also signed several other measures, including an expansion of Florida’s Swimming Lesson Voucher Program to children ages one through seven, and a bill naming a Jupiter Sound island after Andrew “Red” Harris, a local man killed in a 2014 boating accident whose foundation builds artificial reefs in Palm Beach County.
