Surveillance video captured five gunshots and horrified screams early Sunday outside Five Stars Banquet Hall in Sunrise, where a security guard shot and killed a 48-year-old man in a wheelchair who was trying to enter a birthday party.

The victim, Kendrick English, was a former football star at Stranahan High School who had been paralyzed since his teens. Police arrested 26-year-old Francisco Sanchez, a private security guard working the event, and charged him with depraved and dangerous murder. He is being held without bond.

According to the arrest report, English attempted to enter the party, was turned away by Sanchez, and when he tried again, Sanchez drew his weapon and shot him multiple times.

The community gathered for a second consecutive night Monday to mourn English. Friends and loved ones questioned how anyone could have viewed him as a threat. “He was a gentle soul, a peaceful soul,” said friend Alexis Dorrell. “The last person I thought this would happen to.”

Sanchez remains in custody.
