Miami-Dade Cracks Down: Over 1,400 Disabled Parking Permits Canceled

Miami-Dade County has launched its most aggressive enforcement effort yet against abuse of disabled parking permits, canceling more than 1,400 placards following a sweeping audit.

Tax Collector Dariel Fernández described the initiative as the most comprehensive in county history, aimed at protecting seniors, veterans, and residents who genuinely rely on these permits. Officials reviewed over 27,000 applications, confirming most as valid but flagging a significant number for irregularities or lack of verification.

Those found holding invalid permits are now being ordered to surrender them immediately. Cases involving suspected fraud have been referred to state and local authorities, including the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

Fernández emphasized that misuse of the system is not a minor violation but a serious offense that undermines public trust. Under Florida law, fraudulent use of disabled permits can result in up to one year in jail, $1,000 in fines, and disqualification from obtaining a new permit for up to four years.

The audit includes both temporary and permanent permits issued over the past two years, and officials say more cancellations could follow as the review continues.
